Opportunities for Juniors
Oxford Advanced Studies Program summer course will take place in Oxford from 1st to 25th July 2008. The course offers students a taste of life as an Oxford student, with teaching in the tutorial mode favoured by the university. Course brochure may be obtained by contacting them at www.oasp.ac.uk.
National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) and Southern Methodist University will sponsor the Accounting Career Awareness Program during the week of June 22-27, 2008 on the campus of SMU. The students must have a current GPA of 3.0 and meet all requirements outlined in the application. Additionally, selected students into the program will have an opportunity to compete for a $2,000 cash scholarship to be used to defray expenses directly related to tuition and fees upon acceptance and enrollment into an accredited College or University. Baylor University's Renaissance Scholar Program offers students an integrated introduction to topics in engineering/technology with complimentary readings in history, art, literature, philosophy, and theology. The University of Mississippi has Summer College for High School Students. The Summer college is comprised of ten programs and institutes in a variety of disciplines and varying degrees of difficulty. There will be a session from May 26 - June 24 and another one June 25- July 25. University of Texas MITE: Introduction to Engineering 2008 will have two sessions: June 8-13 and June 15-20. All program expenses are paid by UT Austin with the exception of travel to and from the university. Applications must be postmarked by April 4, 2008. We Care for Kids Network, Inc. is currently registering students for annual College Tours. This year, there are five tour packages available which students will be able to choose from based on specific collegiate preference. Each tour will cover a distinct geographical area within the United States and will include airfare (if applicable), transportation, lodging, meals, student led campus tours, meetings with admission officers, materials for evaluating schools, and activities. The U.S. Department of Education's office of Federal Student Aid is pleased to announce the release of FAFSA4caster, a new Web tool designed to assist high school juniors and their families plan for education beyond high school. Students can receive an estimated Expected Family Contribution (EFC) by entering their information into FAFSA4caster, a simplified version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FFSA). Access this by visiting www.FederalStudent/Aid.ed.gov. The links for FAFSA4caster are located in the lower right corner of the home page.
Take the SAT Online Course!
Each year C-FB purchases SAT Online Course access for every student in grades 9-12. The program helps prepare students for college tests and success. Once the students register no additional fees are collected by College Board and students can utilize 18 interactive lessons covering the areas of critical reading, writing, and mathematics.
Each student who registers for The Official SAT Online Course will need a unique access code. In September, the College Board sent each of our high schools new student registration cards for incoming students. Deb Moss in Student Services has these cards for distribution. If students need a card they need to see Mrs. Moss.
Occasionally, there are scholarships available for Juniors. When those are made known to the counseling office, they will be listed here.
Wofford College announces the 60th annual Wofford Scholars Program. Qualified candidates are eligible to compete for scholarships ranging from $2,000 to full scholarships ($38,000). If you are in the top 10% of your class and have a minimum score of 1200 (critical reading and math) on the PSAT or SAT, or 26 composite on the PLAN or ACT, and would like to have a nomination from your counselor, see Mrs. Crenshaw before April 4, 2008.
Abbott and Fenner Scholarship - $1,000 - A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors between the ages of 16 and 30. To apply, you will need to write an essay on one of two topics. You may access their website for the topics and all other information at www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm.

Explore colleges. List college features which suit your interests, needs, and abilities, and try to rank them in order of importance to you. These features include size, type of college, location, fields of study offered, academic quality, necessary facilities, cost and financial aid opportunities, and social and cultural environments.
April
Start to narrow your college choices based on what you want rather than on such things as difficult admissions, requirements, popularity, or national reputation.
Register to take the SAT and/or the ACT test in June.
Consider taking the SAT II in conjunction with any AP courses taken during the Junior Year.
Acceptance to a U.S. service academy requires a congressional or executive nomination by one of the applicant's U.S. Senators, his/her U.S. Representative, or the Vice President. You should send a letter or e-mail to one or all of them as early as possible, but no later than October 1st, and request an application.

Develop a preliminary list of colleges which interest you. Write for their catalogs and application forms, citing your academic and other interests.
Register to take the SAT and/or the ACT test in June if you have not already done so.
Continue to focus on academic success.

Most colleges and families expect students to help pay for college costs. If possible, use your summer to earn money for college in a job related to your career interests.

Consider a college visit in conjunction with any summer travels you (and your family) may make. Call the Admission office in advance to schedule a visit.

Colleges and universities frequently offer the opportunity to prospective students to visit their campuses. Below are dates and campuses that have notified us of scheduled day or weekend visits. Many of these require registration. Check with the college or university of your choice to see when they have visits scheduled. See Mrs. Crenshaw for registration information.

The Go Center, previously the Career/College Resource Room (located just off of the main Student Services area) is loaded with information to help you pursue your future. There are catalogs and video tapes from many colleges, SAT/ACT/THEA/NCAA registration bulletins, Texas and Common Applications, military information, scholarship and financial aid information, computers w/internet access and many web addresses that are useful tools for researching schools, scholarships, financial aid and much, much more.
Please - don’t remove the college catalogs from the Resource Room. Other materials are available to take home. Please check with Mrs. Crenshaw or Mrs. Moss to see what may and may not be taken. Thanks!
