My main responsibilities are:
Anti-Virus technology - I am the person that stops your attachments coming through in email. I don't do it because I am mean I do it because on an average day we block about 3000 infected attachments.
Spam - I also have a lot to do with Spam. We are constantly trying to improve our Anti-Spam technology. Our latest program delivers the Spam mail to your Spam Folder for you to check to see if items are going there that shouldn't be. You can also permanently ad them to your do not quarantine list now. The reason we went to the end-user hands on program is that you all were losing too many legitimate emails. On a general day we will see about 30,000 spam messages come through our district Email servers.
Backups - Have you ever deleted something or had something deleted that you needed. You call the helpdesk and I get the call to retrieve it. For the most part we keep data for 3 weeks unless it is a critical system in which we might keep it for much longer. Currently we have three separate backup systems in place. Critical, Non-Critical, and Offsite. Critical's include such items as SASI data or Kronos Data. Non-Critical's include your G: drive or your S: drive. Offsite backups are done by a 3rd party to keep a backup of all our Critical data offsite incase of a disaster at our Network Operations Center.
Updates - No one will ever accuse Microsoft as being too secure or not buggy. That's where I come in with the Microsoft Systems Update Service. What this does is keeps a running tab on your software on your machine it checks it against my approved updates on our Patch Server. If you need a patch you will receive it that night or the next time you log in. It can be unpleasant at times when a reboot is required, but it is not near as bad to leave a security hole on your machine that can be exploited by a malicious person or program.
Upkeep on Network Health - This is the standard day to day stuff like taking care of broken servers, programs, printers, ect. If you call the helpdesk with a network issue be assured we will get the report and do our best to resolve it in a timely manner.
