GRADE LEVELS:   Open to students completing grades K-7.

ELIGIBILITY:            Any student who failed TAKS, absence failed, or course failed   is NOT eligible for Exploration. You may register your child for Exploration before TAKS scores are released; however, if your child must attend TAKS summer school, a refund will be issued.

AVAILABILITY:     Classes filled by the date of registration and payment received. Class sizes are limited.

COURSES:                   All students will take 2 classes with a short break between them.  Session I (8:40-10:40) and Session II (10:40 – 12:40).

Young Paleontologist and Geologist   Grades K -2 

This course is about developing a deeper knowledge about the earth, rocks, volcanoes, fossils, and dinosaurs through books, videos, and various hands-on projects.   Students will create dinosaur t-shirts, fossil necklace, volcano rock garden, and a model of the earth. 2,4,6,8 Isn’t Learning Math Great  Grades K-2

Students will make math come to life with hands on activities, literature, and simple crafts.   Students will work together to develop an understanding of math concepts, learn units of measurement and create complex patterns.  At the end of the 4 week period students will be able to create their own math game for all the students to play. Exploring Children’s Literature  Grades K-2

Come join the delightful world of children’s books.  We’ll read, dramatize, talk about books, work with groups, generally enjoy picture books and chapter books together.  In the process, we’ll learn to understand more, appreciate more, and experience more about children’s books.  Mother Goose on the Loose!  Grades K-2

Students will combine language arts, math, science, history, art, music, and drama to deepen their understanding of classic nursery rhymes!  Students will plant flowers, conduct science experiments and participate in math workshops as they learn and explore different nursery rhymes.  We will perform a play titled; “Mother Goose’s Goose is Loose” at the end of the program to help Mother Goose find her lost Goose!  (40 students max) Lyons

 Oceans of Fun Grades K-2

Description:  Your budding marine biologist will be diving into learning about oceans and sea life.  We will be using science, math, reading, writing, and technology as we explore the vast world under the sea.  Our junior marine biologists will be participating in projects, crafts, and a musical finale.  Dive in!  A to Zoo Grades K-2   CLASS is CLOSED

Go wild” this summer in A to Zoo!  This class will be geared for students entering 1st through 3rd grade.  The class will be a month long exploration of zoo animals, their habitats, and what its like to be a zoo keeper.  We'll discover new facts about the animals through books and videos, along with enjoying fictional stories about them as well.  We’ll also use art, music, movement activities, and technology to deepen our learning.  By the end of Exploration Academy our classroom will look like a zoo and the students will have the knowledge of a Jr. Zookeeper!  (40 students max) Murphy

 The Music Time Capsule  Grades K-4

The students will explore the music of the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s including artists of the time, dances of the tome and virtual trips to significant places.  They will also learn simple dance steps of these time periods.  (40 student max) Owens

Zardip’s Health Club Grades K-3

Students will jump rope, exercise to music, play games of agility, make a macaroni skeleton, and play Tug-O-War.  We have an indoor Olympics and use hula hoops, balls, and jump ropes to get fit and have fun.  We create a journal to reflect on what we learn.  Help Zardip, our class robot, discover the secret of good health.  Zardip’s class rocks out! Mad Scientists Grades K-4

This exciting, hands-on science class will be performing wacky science experiments to collect data and understand the outcome. Activities will include science experiments from chemistry, life science and physical science. Students will learn the steps of the scientific process and incorporate technology. Play Ball Grades K-7

Students will review skills in tennis, golf, flag football, floor hockey, volleyball, softball, Frisbee, and track and field.  (80 students max) Sughrue, Morrison

 The Art of Math  Grades 1-7

Students will discover the pleasure of learning math while creating exciting art projects.  Students will create a variety of 2 and 3 dimensional art projects to help them become master mathematicians.  (40 students max) Lockwood

  Science WOW! Grades 4-7     CLASS is CLOSED

Bubbles and dry ice, the ULTIMATE symbols of fun, will be investigated in this unique science class. What will happen to dry ice if it is heated or put in a soap solution? Can you blow a bubble with a pair of scissors or a piece of paper? Can you predict when a bubble will pop? Be prepared to explore the visible and invisible worlds of dry ice and bubbles! iBOT Lego League grades 4-7

This class is ALL about Robotics-the construction, programming and implications of robots using LEGO Mindstorms ROBOTIC KITS. Students will work in small groups to build, program and test robots. At the end of the program the students will be able to show off their newly acquired talents. (40 students max) Pruitt  

 Are Your Board Yet? Grades 3-7

Students will design and construct their own board games based on their favorite picture books. At the end of the session, they will play each other’s games and leave with their own board game ready to play again and again. Watch out, Milton Bradley! (40 students max) Frishman

 A Taste of the World Grades 3-7

 Students will use food preparation skills to create and sample dishes from countries around the world. They will also assemble interesting facts and recipes into an illustrated cookbook that they can take home at the end of the class.

 15 Reasons (Not) To Be In A Play: An Introduction to Theatre Production Grades: 3-7

Students will venture through the production process for a stage play from audition to curtain call!! Enjoy the show during the Open House at the end of Exploration Academy. (40 student max) Dunkel

Crochet for Everyone Create Your own Fun  Grades: 3-7

This class is for anyone who would like to learn a new, creative skill, create useful items, have fun, and make a difference in the community.  We will learn basic stitches and create items such as juggling balls, hats, scarves, boxes, small stuffed animals, and more. We will also create a project for Warm Up America, an organization that provides handmade items to people in need. (20 students max) Prine

 Media Madness Grades 4-7

Using the latest in CFB Technology students will use multimedia programs such as Photo Story 3, PowerPoint, Audacity, and Jodix, to create multimedia presentations.   Students will use these programs to create presentations for their very own podcasts.  (40 students max) Prine

 Harry Potter at Exploration Academy Grades 3-7

Want to spend a month at Hogwarts? Join us for 4 weeks in our own version of Hogwarts. We’ll study the main characters of Harry Potter, test your knowledge of the books, attempt some games of quidditch, design and market broomsticks, and even try out some of the foods from the series. SAGE Eligibility:  

Students must be identified as ACE, Academic Creative Education or

LEAP, Leading Exceptional Academic Producers

and are in Kindergarten through seventh grade for the 2008 – 2009 school year.

SAGE Courses

Grades K - 2 Getting Your PhD: Doctor of Sciences

SAGE Kindergarten: Playing with rhyme & reason, hunting for clues, Dabbling with food

Kinder students will become scientists while participating in hands-on, discovery based learning activities. The young scientist will concentrate on identifying PATTERNS in all content areas.  The literature rich curriculum will include Junior Great Books and Readers Theater, Math Conversions, Famous Artists, Properties of Matter, math problem solving skills, plus many humorous texts that promote creative thinking skills. SAGE kindergarteners will become pattern detectives as they investigate pointillism and engage in various games that promote higher order thinking skills. Some activities students will enjoy are “Magic Muck”, Silly Putty, face painting, Bouncing Raisins, Rainbow Fish, and Dumb Bunnies!

SAGE First Grade: Promoting chemical reactions, heading for the stars, Discovering dollars

First graders will explore the sciences and become number experts! Their activities will focus on CHANGE through chemistry, meteorology, and economics. These budding scientists will scaffold their learning using literature, Thinking Maps, Junior Great Books and multiple science experiments. Topics will include chemistry, physics, and Discovering Dollar-Economics.  SAGE first grade students will create their own literary works, attend Spanish class, and incorporate math while working with recipes – such as changing servings and ingredients by multiplying and dividing.  Music, art, and creativity will be integrated as the SAGE first grade students explore their changing world.

SAGE Second Grade: Pondering the sky, having the whole idea, Delving into numbers

Second graders will tackle science as it relates to constellations and galaxies. They will investigate RELATIONSHIPS in astronomy, proportions, and statistics. These future astronomers will construct conversion charts changing mathematical proportions to decimal numbers and percentages as they study the mysteries of the Solar System and the different planets.  Students will have fun investigating the many cause and effect relationships between the elements on Earth and in the atmosphere!  Zoology and physics are the realms of science SAGE second grade students will explore while making connections to the varied relationships in our changing world. Second graders will attend Spanish classes.

Grades 3-4 Examining the Earth from Inside Out

SAGE Third Grade:

Third graders will use their creative and critical thinking skills as they study the Earth, Pangaea Theory, and earthquakes. The third grade students will enjoy a novel study of Earthquake Terror and create projects with papier mache` models of the earth, power point presentations, and dioramas.  Students will design and build “earthquake proof” buildings, and a seizmograph. They will focus on SYSTEMS of algebra and problem solving. They will test algebraic theories through hands-on experiences.  Third graders will attend Spanish classes.

SAGE Fourth Grade:

     SAGE fourth grade students will study the STRUCTURES of the continents and how they are affected by the inner-workings of the earth and plate tectonics. They will also take a closer look at the sea floor and the many formations underneath our oceans.  Students will create real life models and journal statistical data in their personal lab book (in preparation for 5th grade science the following year!). 

Several computer programs such as PowerPoint, Photostory, and Publisher will be utilized to create student projects.   SAGE fourth graders will be using the Lego Robotics kits to build robotic vehicles, which they will program using computers.

Man has yearned for power for centuries.  The search continues as students look at the multiple meanings, nature’s forces, and uses of power. 

We need ‘volunteers’ to develop the newest version of a presentation platform.  By participating in this project, you will create an interactive program designed to ensure broader communication, improve collaborative skills, and increase productivity.    This experience promises to be dynamic, high-impact, and “POWER-ful”!

Get Down With Nature

  "The Amateur Naturalist" is an exciting outdoor program for Carrollton-Farmers Branch elementary students!

The camp will provide quality scientific outdoor experiences such as wildlife sampling, ecology games, population studies, science experiments, nature art, journals and record keeping, collections, and scavenger hunts!  All activities will help the student develop an understanding of basic environmental concepts as well as an appreciation of the natural world.  The program gives students opportunities for personal achievement and self-expression with nature-related activities in the wild.
