SAGE Courses

Grades K - 2 Getting Your PhD: Doctor of Sciences

Grade K: Playing with rhyme & reason, hunting for clues, Dabbling with food

Kinder students will become scientists while participating in hands-on, discovery based learning activities. The young scientist will concentrate on identifying PATTERNS in all content areas.  The literature rich curriculum will include Junior Great Books and Readers Theater, plus many humorous texts that promote creative thinking skills. As pattern detectives they will cook, sing and play various games that promote higher order thinking skills.

Grade 1: Promoting chemical reactions, heading for the stars, Discovering dollars

First graders will explore the sciences and become number experts. Their activities will focus on CHANGE through chemistry, meteorology, and economics. These budding scientists will scaffold their learning using literature, Thinking Maps, Junior Great Books and multiple science experiments.

Grade 2: Pondering the sky, having the whole idea, Delving into numbers

Second graders will tackle science as it relates to the sky. They investigate RELATIONSHIPS in astronomy, proportions, and statistics. These future astronomers will construct conversion charts changing mathematical proportions to decimal numbers and percentages. Students will have fun investigating the many cause and effect relationships between the elements on Earth and in the atmosphere!

Grades 3-4 Examining the Earth from Inside Out

Third graders will use their creative and critical thinking skills as they explore Astronomy – through studying the constellations, Zoology – endangered animals, adaptations and habitats, and Physics – with experiments involving density, friction, force, laws of motion, pressure and sound.  They will focus on SYSTEMS of Algebra and problem solving.

Algebra and Geometry will be the math components for Fourth grade while they study STRUCTURES of the Earth’s surface and the ocean floor. The use of technology programs such as SimCity and Geographical Information Systems (GSI) will have 4th graders experiencing map making skills in a fun way! Fourth graders will also be exploring the formation of the earth and the causes and effects of earthquakes, while they eat their way through the earth’s crust and design their own earthquake PowerPoint presentations.

Grades 3-4 SAGE classes will have the opportunity to learn basic conversational Spanish.  The students will learn to play games that are part of the Spanish heritage and create simple presentations in Spanish.

Grades 5 – 7: PowerPoint 2008

Man has yearned for power for centuries.  The search continues as students look at the multiple meanings, nature’s forces, and uses of power.  Interactive Lego math activities, similar to robotics, will be set up for discovery.

We need ‘volunteers’ to develop the newest version of a presentation platform.  By participating in this project, you will create an interactive program designed to ensure broader communication, improve collaborative skills, and increase productivity.    This experience promises to be dynamic, high-impact, and “POWER-ful”!

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Outdoor Learning Center goes far beyond providing the district with a 42 acre tract of land.  It allows approximately five thousand students a year to experience nature.  The peninsula formed by the center allows for very diverse animal and plant populations.  The surrounding bodies of water are Denton Creek and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.  Every second, fourth, and sixth grade student spends one day performing scientific experiments in an exciting outdoor setting.

It is available for use by any class in the district for environmental or outdoor studies.  It has been used specifically for special needs children as well as programs with students with limited English skills.  A unique summer school program for elementary students "The Amateur Naturalist" is also available.  The nature of the program provides students with opportunities to use all their senses in discovering the wonders of nature.

A PHILOSOPHY

Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud, turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade in, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hay fields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries, and hornets, and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education.
