Social Studies Sociology - Unit IV Overview

Social Inequality (Chapters 8 - 10)

While we think of the United States as the land of opportunity and one without a strict class system, research on social class and stratification show these assumptions to be mythic.. In this unit students will be introduced to the concepts of social stratification and the inequities of race, ethnicity, gender and age. Social class, poverty and social mobility in America will be explored, as well as, racial and ethnic relations, theories of prejudice and discrimination, gender inequality and ageism.

Critical Questions:

  • Why is social stratification such a powerful variable in American society?
  • How do each of the three perspectives explain social stratification?
  • What is the difference between racism and ethnocentrism?
  • How do sociologists distinguish between "gender" and "sex"?
  • What effect is the aging of the population having on society and on the life chances of the elderly?
