Grade 8 Social Studies - Unit II Overview

Colonization

Creating America Chapters 2, 3, and 4

The study of the Colonial era begins with identifying the reasons for European exploration. The colonization of North America is then determined by where the Europeans settled and when. The factors which affected colonization and created regional differences will be examined in terms of economic, political, and social (religious) factors as well as the physical features of America's landscape. Throughout the study of this era, students will be introduced to the development of sectional differences and the growth of representative government and institutes.

Critical Questions:

  • How did geography affect cultural, political and economic development in Colonial America?
  • What role did religion play in the shaping of colonial America?
  • Why did representative government grow in colonial America?
