Grade 5 Social Studies - Unit VIII Overview

The 20th Century and Beyond

In Unit VIII, students will study the United States in the 20th century, including national celebrations, technological advances, scientific discoveries, increased industrialization, and innovations in both transportation and communication. They will research significant individuals who have influenced the 20th century, including such eminent citizens as Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Neil Armstrong. Developments and progress in improving the equality of opportunity for Americans will be explored, as well as the events that helped with the advancement. Customs, celebrations, traditions, and contributions of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups in the United States will be considered.

  • How have technological innovations and scientific development helped to improve the quality of life in the 20th Century?
  • How have scientific discoveries and technological innovations benefited society during the 20th Century?
  • What are the qualities of good leadership?
  • What major events would be considered turning points during the 20th Century? Why?
