Grade 8 Science - Unit IX Overview

Matter and Energy

In the ninth unit, Matter & Energy, the students will describe and compare how thermal energy is absorbed or released when matter changes state. Students will be able to write chemical equations describing these reactions. The students will determine the heat capacity for a variety of substances and relate heat capacity to specific heat.

Critical Questions:
  • How do you determine if a chemical reaction is endothermic or exothermic?
  • In what way does specific heat relate to heat capacity?

Suggested Time Frame: 2 weeks

Student Performance Expectations

Key

Information in the brackets that is not in bold (8.2A) is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill (TEKS) that this objective is aligned to.

Information in the brackets that is in bold (8.2.11B) (8.2.12A) (11.2US10A) is the specific Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS- test) objective this objective is aligned to.

Identify and demonstrate chemical reactions that release (exothermic) and absorb (endothermic) heat. (8.10 C)
Illustrate interactions between matter and energy including specific heat. (8.10 A)
