Grade 6 Science - Unit V Overview

Solar System

The Solar System unit guides students to identify characteristics of objects in our solar system. Students will describe how the properties of the system are different from the properties of the parts. Students will describe the equipment and transportation needs for space travel.

Critical Questions

  • How do the parts of a system relate to the whole?
  • What mathematic skills can a science student use to collect or analyze data?
  • How are the properties of the system different from the properties of the parts?
  • How does a model represent the natural world?
  • Compare and contrast the objects in our solar system.
  • What do you think the space program will accomplish in your lifetime?
  • Project the needs of space travel in the future.

    Suggested Time Frame: 4 weeks

  • Student Performance Expectations

    Key

Information in the brackets that is not in bold (8.2A) is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill (TEKS) that this objective is aligned to.

Information in the brackets that is in bold (8.2.11B) (8.2.12A) (11.2US10A) is the specific Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS- test) objective this objective is aligned to.

Identify and describe a system that results from the combination with other systems to form a larger system, i.e. the solar system. (6.3 C; 6.4 A; 6.5 A-B; 6.13 A)
Students will investigate current transportation and equipment needs for space travel and project what will be needed to travel farther into outer space.
