Grade 6 Science - Unit III Overview

Characteristics of Life

In the Characteristics of Life unit, students will determine the characteristics and needs of life and identify how structure complements function at different levels of organization. Proper use of the microscope will be stressed.

Students will identify cells as structures containing genetic material and understand the role of genes in inheritance. Students will also understand that changes in traits can occur over generations.

Critical Questions:

  • How does the microscope improve our study of the characteristics of life?
  • How are structure and function related?
  • Why is it important to understand and use safety procedures when in a science laboratory?
  • How do students use critical thinking and problem solving skills to make informed decisions?
  • How are genetic traits related to what we observe.

Suggested Time Frame: 5.5 weeks
