Grade 5 Science - Unit X Overview

Force and Motion

The Force and Motion unit guides the student to conduct investigations to explore the Laws of Motion. The student will look at the interactions in a simple system that result in a change of direction of motion. Basic resources include: McGraw-Hill Science textbook, Digital Curriculum Press titles (downloadable videos available from the internet), CFB Smart Plus lessons/questions (password: smart), and web-based resources.

Critical Questions:
  • What effect does force have on motion?

  • What interactions occur in a simple system?

  • What would happen to this system if a part was missing or quit working?

    Suggested Time Frame: 1 week

Student Performance Expectations

Key

Information in the brackets that is not in bold (8.2A) is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill (TEKS) that this objective is aligned to.

Information in the brackets that is in bold (8.2.11B) (8.2.12A) (11.2US10A) is the specific Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS- test) objective this objective is aligned to.

Describe some cycles found in a simple system.  Describe some interactions that occur in a simple system.  Identify interactions in a system through changes in motion. Review a push or pull as a directional change and identify Newton's 3 Laws of motion as a consistent action that takes place whenever a force is applied. (5.5 A-B)
