Grade 5 Science - Unit I Overview

Scientific Process

The Scientific Process unit guides the student to an effective approach in understanding hands on science. In this unit, students are expected to demonstrate safe use of the lab and equipment, follow lab safety rules, apply the on-going process of scientific investigation, and use critical thinking to problem solve. Returning and reviewing this unit throughout the school year is recommended. Basic resources include: McGraw-Hill Science textbook, Digital Curriculum Press titles (downloadable videos available from the internet), CFB Smart Plus lessons/questions (password: smart), and web-based resources.

Critical Questions:
  • Why is it important to understand and use safety procedures when in a science laboratory?
     
  • How do students carry out the scientific process when solving problems in the science classroom?
     
  • What scientific techniques can students use to analyze and interpret data?
     
  • How do students use critical thinking and problem solving skills to make informed decisions?
    Suggested Time Frame: 2 Weeks and ongoing in all units

Draw inferences based on information collected from data in promotional materials for products and services…such as the Smoky the Bear campaign and its effect on prevention of forest fires. Identify the contributions of scientists and the impact of their discoveries on society. (5.3 A-C); T5
