Grade 4 Science - Unit V Overview

Matter Unit

The Matter Unit will include the identification of the states of matter, experimentation to discover their properties, and the classification of matter. In addition, the effects of physical change as well as the changes in states of matter caused by the addition and reduction of heat are explored.

Students will investigate buoyancy and the densities of solids, liquids, and gases by conducting tests, comparing data and drawing conclusions. The Matter Unit closes with a kinesthetic assessment of matter concepts.

Critical Questions:
  • How do students identify properties of objects to recognize that patterns exist?

  • How do students use classifying skills in the science classroom?

  • How can students recognize that there is a reason for every effect and a result for every cause?

Suggested Time Frame: 6 Weeks
