Grade 2 Science - Unit III Overview

Air and Weather

In the Air and Weather Unit, students will investigate the properties of air through the acitvities in the FOSS Air and Weather Kit. Students will explain that weather is a condition of the atmosphere at any given time, identify the many factors that contribute to weather and identify weather changes from day to day and season to season.

Students will identify parts of the water cycle, examine how they are dependent on one another and infer what the effect would be if one part was missing. Students will observe evidence of wind speed, strength and direction. They will use wind instruments (anemometer and wind vane) to observe the effects of wind direction and speed on objects.

Critical Questions:

  • What are some examples of air movement?
  • What are the factors that contribute to weather?
  • How are parts of the water cycle connected to each other?
  • What is the importance of measuring wind speed and direction?

Suggested Time Frame: 7 weeks and ongoing observations

Student Performance Expectations

Key

Information in the brackets that is not in bold (8.2A) is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill (TEKS) that this objective is aligned to.

Information in the brackets that is in bold (8.2.11B) (8.2.12A) (11.2US10A) is the specific Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS- test) objective this objective is aligned to.

Explore properties of air, construct parachutes and observe how they move through air, observe compressed air moving objects, and explain how air can propel a balloon rocket system. (2.7A)
Identify many factors that contribute to weather, such as how hot/cold, wet/dry, calm/stormy, clear/cloudy it is. (2.5B)
Observe and identify weather changes from day to day and season to season. (2.5A) (2.7A & D)
Identify the parts of the water cycle and how they are dependent on one another. Explain effect one part missing would have on this system. (2.10A)
Observe evidence of wind speed, strength and direction and use different wind instruments (anemometer, wind vane). Observe the effects of wind direction and speed on objects. (2.2D) (2.4A) (2.7A & C)
