Grade 2 Science - Unit I Overview

Safety and Scientific Investigation

In the Safety and Scientific Investigations unit, students will demonstrate safe practices during classroom and field investigations. Students will also use critical and logical thinking to describe objects and events, ask questions, construct explanations, test those explanations against current scientific knowledge, and communicate ideas to others. Finally, students will investigate the proper way to use measurement tools and determine the specific uses for each tool.

This unit is integrated in all units.

Critical Questions:

  • Why is it important to practice safety procedures during field and laboratory investigations?
  • Why is it important to use age-appropriate tools to collect, measure, observe, compare and classify data?
  • Why do we need to learn to ask critical questions, plan and conduct simple investigations to gather data, and draw constructive conclusions?

Suggested Time Frame: 2 weeks and ongoing throughout the year.
