Grade 1 Science - Unit IV Overview

Human Body Systems

In Unit 4 Human Body Systems, the students will learn to use age-appropriate tools to sort, measure, and classify information gathered about the systems of the human body. Students will be able to sort organisms of the human body according to their parts and characteristics. Students will be able to observe and describe the parts of the human body. Students will group and compare living organisms as well as ask questions about organisms. Students will learn to plan and conduct simple descriptive investigations about the human body, gather information, construct reasonable explanations and draw conclusions to the investigations.

Critical Questions:
  • How do living organisms change as they grow?
  • How do different parts of the body work together to help us move and function?
  • What are the basic needs of living organisms?
  • What observations can be made about mass, size, color, sound and movement of living organisms?

Suggested Time Frame: 4 weeks

Student Performance Expectations

Key

Information in the brackets that is not in bold (8.2A) is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill (TEKS) that this objective is aligned to.

Information in the brackets that is in bold (8.2.11B) (8.2.12A) (11.2US10A) is the specific Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS- test) objective this objective is aligned to.

Sort organisms according to their parts and characteristics. Observe and describe the parts of animals. Explore how living organisms change as they grow and how different parts of the human body work together to help us move and function. Identify characteristics of living organisms that allow their basic needs to be met. Compare and give examples of the ways living organisms depend on each other for their basic needs. (1.6A-B, 1.9A-B)
Collect information using tools, record and compare collected information. Students will Measure organisms and parts of organisms using non-standard units. Use measuring tools to measure parts of their body. Observe, measure and record changes in mass, size, color, position, quantity, sound and movement. Observe and record changes in the life cycle of organisms. (1.4C, 1.7A)
Ask questions about organisms, Plan and conduct simple descriptive investigations. Gather information using simple equipment and tools to extend the senses. Construct reasonable explanations and draw conclusions. Communicate explanations and draw conclusions. (1.2C-D)
