Grade 1 Science - Unit II Overview

Living and Non-Living

In Unit 2 on living organisms and nonliving items of a pond, the students will learn to sort living organisms and nonliving objects into groups. They will be able to identify parts of living organisms, and identify an organism as a system. Students will be able to identify and test ways heat may cause changes to substances (such as ice). Students will also observe and record changes in the weather. They will learn how weather can change the life cycles of living organisms in a pond. Students will identify and compare living organisms of a pond and learn how they depend on each other for basic needs.

Critical Questions:
  • What are the characteristics of nonliving and living organisms?
  • How does heat cause change to substances?
  • How does weather effect living organisms of a pond?

Suggested Time Frame: 5 Weeks
