Grade 1 Science - Unit I Overview

Safety and Scientific Investigation

In Unit 1 on Safety and Scientific Investigation, the students will learn to safely conduct classroom and field investigations. The students will learn to use age-appropriate tools to collect, measure, observe, compare and classify data. The students will learn to ask critical questions, plan and conduct simple investigations, gather data, and draw constructive conclusions. The students will also learn to communicate written explanations about the investigations.

Critical Questions:
  • Why is it important to practice safety procedures during field and laboratory investigations?
  • Why is it important to use age-appropriate tools to collect, measure, observe, compare and classify data?
  • Why do we need to learn to ask critical questions, plan and conduct simple investigations to gather data, and draw constructive conclusions?
