Operations
Throughout Unit 3, students build a foundation of the
basic understanding of operation and quantitative
reasoning with rational numbers. Students should have a
thorough understanding of when you use which operation,
what equation you would use to solve, and estimating for
reasonableness before performing the operation. The Stasny Graphic Organizer should be used on a daily
basis. Students should have a great understanding of how
addition and subtraction of rational numbers are related
why multiplication and division of whole numbers is
different than that of fractions and decimals.
Problem Solving, language and communication, connections
within and outside mathematics, and formal and informal
reasoning underlie this unit. Students use these
processes together with technology and manipulative
materials to develop conceptual understanding and solve
problems as they do mathematics. Emphasis should be on
the problem solving strategies of Draw a Picture, Use a
Model, Work Backwards, and Logical Reasoning.
Critical Questions
- Why do you get a smaller answer when multiplying
by a fraction or decimal less than one?
- How do you know when to use what operation when
solving one-step operational word problems?
- What is estimation?
