Grade 8  - Unit I Overview

Coordinate Plane

Throughout Unit 1, students will locate and name points on a coordinate graph. Using all quadrants, the students should have a thorough understanding of the origin as well as how to graph ordered pairs. Students should be able to graph any ordered pair, including fractions and decimal coordinates.

Problem Solving, language and communication, connections within and outside mathematics, and formal and informal reasoning underlie this unit. Students use these processes together with technology and manipulative materials to develop conceptual understanding and solve problems as they do mathematics. Emphasis should be on the problem solving strategies of Look for a Pattern, Make an Organize List, and Use a Picture or Diagram.

Critical Questions

  • What is an ordered pair?
  • How do you locate points on a coordinate plane?
