Grade 7 Math - Unit III Overview

Decimals

Throughout Unit 3, students build a foundation of the basic understandings of number and operation. Students will convert between fractions, decimals and whole numbers and have a great understanding of the relationships between them. Students will primarily focus on the operation of decimals while reinforcing the operation of whole numbers. Students will use the appropriate operation, write the equation they would use, estimate the solution to test for reasonableness and find the solution. Students should use the Stasny Graphic Organizer and understand the relationship between adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals as well as understanding the differences between multiplying and dividing by whole numbers versus decimals.

Problem Solving, language and communication, connections within and outside mathematics, and formal and informal reasoning underlie this unit. Students use these processes together with technology and manipulative materials to develop conceptual understanding and solve problems as they do mathematics. Emphasis should be on the problem solving strategies of Make an Organized List, and Make a Table.

Critical Questions

  • Why when you multiply a whole number by a decimal less than one you get a smaller answer?
  • Dividing by 2 is the same thing as multiplying by what decimal? Why?
