Throughout Unit 2, students will continue to build a foundation
of basic understandings in number by reading, writing,
describing, comparing and ordering whole numbers. The will also
continue to solve meaningful problems involving addition and
subtraction and will to learn and apply basic multiplication
facts. Students will also spend a great deal of time
identifying patterns that will help them remember their basic
facts. Students will organize data, choose an appropriate method
to display the data, and interpret the data to make decisions
and predictions.
Students will use appropriate language and organizational
structures such as tables and charts to represent and
communicate relationships and make predictions. Students will
also tell and write time.
Problem Solving will continue daily using the Problem Solving
Flow Chart, Stasny's approach to one-step operational word
problems with emphasis on Looking for a Pattern and Making a
Table. Problem Solving, language and communication, connections
within and outside mathematics, and formal and informal
reasoning underlie this unit. Students use these processes
together with technology and manipulative materials to develop
conceptual understanding and solve problems as they do
mathematics.
Critical Questions:
- How do patterns help you remember the basic multiplication
facts?
- How are addition and subtraction related?
