English I Language Arts - Unit IV Overview

Through the reading of short stories or a teacher-selected novel, students will extend their knowledge and skill of responding to literature in short answer response format using text-based evidence. Students will relate their knowledge of previously learned literary terms to the reading material.

A strong emphasis is placed on sentence-combining skills to assist in writing effective, concise sentences which include embedded quotations from the literature.

Critical Questions:
  • What are the characteristics of a quality text-based response to literature?
  • How does sentence-combining lead to a more sophisticated style of writing?
  • What literary devices used by authors create interest and broaden the reader's knowledge of content?
