Grade 6 IDS Language Arts - Unit III Overview

Using fiction literature--such as myths, legends, and novels--as models, students will demonstrate essential language arts knowledge and skills in a variety of ways and will apply these skills to write an original descriptive essay and other kinds of essays. Students will use the writing process skills to become more fluent and to develop more sophisticated structures in their writing. The focus will be on developing ideas and using literary devices to enhance writing.

Critical Questions:

  • What are the critical elements of myths, legends, and/or novels, and how do they compare to other genres of fiction?

  • What is the relationship of figurative language/sound devices in reading to development of ideas and sentence fluency in writing?

  • What are the critical attributes of a descriptive essay, and how do they compare to other modes of composition?

  • What are some reading strategies that helps students with test preparations?
