English III Language Arts - Unit VI Overview

The focus for this six weeks is two-fold: contemporary literature and media literacy. The literature revolves around the post-modern era through the reading of a play while the media literacy deals with print advertising. Special emphasis is given to the historical events of the time, namely integration in a postwar society, and how they are reflected in the literature.

Critical Questions:
  • How do post-modern authors use literature as social commentary?
  • What literary terms are crucial to the understanding of drama?
  • How can creative writing be used to reinforce various aspects of the literature?
  • What elements of grammar and mechanics lend sophistication and correctness to a piece of writing?
  • What role do the media, specifically advertising, play in contemporary society?
  • What techniques do advertisers use to reach and influence audiences?
