Art

The Activities Team will foster student confidence,

proficiency in performance skills, and facilitate the

skills needed to practice life long wellness enabling

them to make a successful transition to middle school.

 

Vocabulary

Line:

An identifiable path of a point moving in space. It can vary in shape, width, direction and length. It can imply shape, form, or even movement.

Shape:

The two dimensional (2-D) flat spaces between or around objects. Examples include squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, and ovals.

Form:

The three dimensional (3-D) non-flat spaces taken by object that have many sides and viewpoints. Examples include cubes, spheres, pyramids and living things.

Texture:

Visual Texture looks as like you could feel it while Actual Texture is how it really feels. Examples include soft, smooth, rough, slick, bumpy, etc.

Space:

The empty place or surface in or around a work of art. Space can be two or three dimensional and negative or positive.

Value:

The lightness (highlights) and darkness (shadows) of colors in artwork. This effects how they are seen and can make images look three dimensional.

Color:

When light is reflected off an object, color is what the eye sees. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. The secondary colors are orange, purple and green. Cool colors are blue, green, and purple. Warm colors are red, yellow, and orange.

Balance:

The arrangement of one or more elements in a work of art so that they appear symmetrical (even) or asymmetrical (uneven) in design and proportion.

Contrast:

Created by using opposites near or beside one another, such as a light object next to a dark object or a rough texture next to a smooth texture.

Proportion:

The relationship between objects in a work of art. The size, location, or amount of one thing compared to another.

Pattern:

Repetition of a line, shape, or color over and over again.

Rhythm:

When the regular repetition of particular forms or elements occurs in a work of art, that work is said to have rhythm. It suggests motion.

Emphasis:

One part is made more important than the rest and stand out by contrast, size, placement, etc.

Unity:

 All parts work together to make the art work look complete or correct

Variety:

Something that appears different from the rest of the artwork.
