LESSON PLAN #2

Shadow Washed Ink Drawing

Objective: The student will gain an understanding of how to do a quick sketch with brush and Ink (wash); experience drawing with an unusual instrument and detailing over the wash; experiment with variations of lines/marks; show contrast; use viewfinder to create good composition.

Instructions:

  1. mix permanent black ink (or use colored ink or watered-down acrylic paint) in a small container
  2. select a medium size, soft brush to use
  3. Select a strong composition through observation of an actual still life.  Use a viewfinder!!!!
  4. Dip the brush in the prepared water and record shadows of the objects in the selected section of the still life being careful to not outline the objects but to record shadows.
  5. Make 3 wash sketches in one hour and place on the dry rack to dry over night.
  6. Select one of the dry wash sketches and begin their “serious” sketch on top of the wash.
  7. Select several sticks of various sizes and with different “ends” to make their drawing.
  8. Use a small container of pure permanent India ink and dip the sticks directly in that ink.
  9. Using the sticks, begin a serious drawing of the selected still life objects, striving for good proportioning and details of each object.
  10. Use LINE VARIATION in order to record deeper shadows other than the ones made by the wash water the day before.
  11. Ignore the wash while making the drawing.  This effect will give the illusion of two drawings on one paper!

Create a strong composition in the placement of the objects in the drawing?

Have a variety of lines; width, length, implied

Complete the final drawing using sticks to create unusual line qualities?

Complete the assignment with good craftsmanship?
