Carrollton Teacher Wins District VFW Teacher of the Year Award

CARROLLTON, TX -- Commander Rudy McDonald of the Kelsie C. Edington Memorial VFW Post 8923 in Carrollton, Texas, is pleased to recognize Carr Campbell with the Veterans of Foreign Wars 2008-09 Citizenship Teacher of the Year Award.

Campbell is a Texas history teacher at DeWitt Perry Middle School in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District . His nomination was forwarded to VFW District 3, where he received first place in his category.

“Carr exemplifies patriotism in the classroom,” said McDonald. “His dedication to his country and teaching of history, as well as his personal involvement with his students, encompasses everything this award is based upon.”

Campbell is a United States Marine Corps veteran who served in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Those experiences brought him to the teaching doorstep while volunteering for the Junior Achievement program. His calling for teaching our nation’s history was further enhanced while serving as the Chaplain for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8923, where he guest lectured area North Texas schools from 1995-2001. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Campbell officially joined Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District in 2002 when he helped open Ranchview High School. There, he served as a gifted and talented history teacher and varsity football/power lifting coach until an injury ended his coaching career. He has been a teacher at DeWitt Perry for the past three years. He is responsible for organizing Perry’s annual Veteran’s Day Program, as well as introducing the VFW’s “Voice of Democracy/ Patriot's Pen” competition into the school.

The VFW's National Citizenship Education Teachers' Award recognizes the nation's top elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America 's history and traditions. Nearly 1,000 teachers are from every state, the District of Columbia and overseas.

VFW District 3 encompasses the northeast Texas region. Campbell ’s selection as the District 3 winner has been forwarded to the VFW of Texas where he will complete statewide. State winners will then go on to be considered at the national level.
