Art History Resources on the Web  Probably the most inclusive of all art history and research sites.  It is well organized and easy to access.  The number of sites available can be daunting but each offers a unique experience.
Constable.net  Not just on the artist, Constable, but a general, more academic approach to artists and art.
Egyptian Archive  Mostly information on the Old Kingdome and the architecture.

Islamic Art and Architecture
Masters of Photography a part of the Artchive (Mark Harden's) but thorough collection of photographers and their art.
Nineteenth Century Art Worldwide   
the world’s first scholarly, refereed e-journal devoted to the study of nineteenth-century painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, architecture, and decorative arts across the globe. The chronological scope of the journal is the "long" nineteenth century, stretching from the American and French Revolutions, at one end, to the outbreak of World War I, at the other.
Olga's Gallery  can fine a biography for most known artists, has  an alphabet to find your artist and the pictures, when enlarged can be saved well for other purposes.
Sister Wendy's American Collection  Although Sister Wendy does not have many artworks on her site, she delves into each one every deeply.  You can learn a lot about style, medium and subject matter just by reading and/or learning from her rich narrative.
Turning the Pages a wonderful experience allows you to select an ancient text or manuscript and "turn the pages" to view the works of art.

Yahoo Art Web Directory  This site is exactly what it says, it is a directory of art sites, many of which are listed above.  However, it will have many more for you to explore.


Artists
ARTCYCLOPEDIA    This site offers you a number of ways to find artworks including artist name, style, time period, medium, and many more.  There is always information about the artwork.  One other great feature is that you can find artworks in specific museums or from journal articles.  May take some type to get comfortable with the search methods but worth the time.
Artists on Art - excerpts from writings and interviews of great artists past and present on the concept and process of art, as well as artist chronologies of the periods in which they worked.
Caravaggio, Michelangelo  This web site (The Web Gallery of Art) offers the viewer thumbnails of most every painting Caravaggio painted as well as details.  Caravaggio is know for his use of lighting effect and for his use of street people to represent the revered figures in his paintings.  No biographical information available.
Caravaggio Wonderful site relating his work to that of many other by style, subject, materials, etc.

Last Supper close-up phenomenal site (when it comes up) on the Last Supper...it can get you up close and real personal with it.
Leonardo DiVinci  This web site (The Web Gallery of Art) offers most all works created by DiVinci in small thumbnails which can be enlarged and details for study. No biographical information available.

Mark Hardin's Artchive  Especially good site for biographical information on artists and thorough research on styles.  You will also be able to reach some beautiful images of work by more artists than can be seen on most sites.  Know what you are looking for but enjoy the tour.

Michelangelo  Part of the Web Gallery of Art, this has small views which you can see enlarged as well as details of works to be viewed up close.  No biographical information available.

The Van Gogh and Gauguin Relationship  
In this online exhibit, portrayals of typical scenes from their turbulent friendship are based on selections from Van Gogh and Gauguin's letters. A representative selection of paintings from the exhibition also provides an insight into the way the two artists worked and the oeuvre they produced. 
The Web Gallery of Art  This site gives the viewer many options for viewing art work but no biographical information available.
Wet Canvas! Virtual Museum: Georges Seurat   The Web site of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam features images of many of Vincent van Gogh's masterpieces, accompanied by information about the artist.

Amon Carter Museum  Known for its collection of Russell's and Remington's, the Amon Carter Museum is the premier American Art museum in this area.
British Library's Turning Pages- many historical documents as well as illustrated manuscripts. You can turn the pages of some of them...pretty cool.
Crow Collection of Asian Art  Right here in Dallas there is a wonderful collection of Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian art collected by the Crows.
Dallas Museum of Art  Dallas Museum of Art has a great site for students in that it is very multi-culturally oriented.  There is a lot of information that teachers can access for classes as well. Very good to find artworks so close that you can even visit them in person.
Detroit Institute of Arts: Visual Resources Art Image Database  A little harder to navigate, you need to know artist name or title of art.  Van Gogh was van Gogh, etc. You can look by geographical area as well as category once you get into the sight.
Egyptian Archive
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum  Many people have been enamored of Georgia O'Keeffe, especially in this part of the country.  This Museum opened in the late '90s and is known for many types of shows that are held there as well as a wonderful collection of O'Keeffe's.
The Getty  The Getty (in Los Angeles California) is a renown research center for art, not only in making art and artists but for art education as well.

Metropolitan Museum of Art  This site has a very good range of art from all over the world as well as from most time periods.  There are many ways to view the art, both for a quick scan and for more serious study.  This site also has links to other Metropolitan
The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth  This new addition to art in the Metroplex is stunning all who visit.  This museums has a large collection of modern art and the space to reveal the wonders of each era of modern art.
Museum of Modern Art This museum is on the cutting edge of post-Modernism and one of the best museums in the world.
The Nasher Sculpture Garden  Opening on October 20th, 2003 in Dallas, TX, this sculpture garden holds the $400 million dollar collection of Patsy and Raymond Nasher.  All the work is 20th and 21st century work. 
National Gallery of Art  A wonderful site for study.  Students may study in five different languages, go on online tours and research holdings in this magnificent museum.
National Museum of Women in the Arts  This is the most comprehensive site for women artists and enthusiasts about women artists.  The National Museum is not very old but the works come from all ages of production.  If you are looking for gender specific work or thematic styles then this might be a good place to start.
The Rachofsky House This is the actual home of Howard and Cindy Rachofsky who have let a large collection of their modern art to the DMA.

The Van Gogh Museum  The Web site of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam features images of many of Vincent van Gogh's masterpieces, accompanied by information about the artist.
