Multicultural Paper Project and Presentation

This assignment will cover some Non-Western Art chapters of Gardner's Art Through the Ages. The assignment is comprehensive. This assignment does not allow complete freedom of choice. Talk to me about your interests or curiosities as that will give you a better start on this assignment.
Week 10, all topic and chapter assignments will be finalized.

 Part 1: General Outline/notes

Read the one chapter for the art tradition you have been assigned. Read, take notes, and look for information that best fits into the thesis topics listed below. These notes must be turned in by Week 12.  No late work will be accepted. At this time you will focus on one of the following themes for your paper/presentation.

Survival and Beyond:  Reproduction and Sexuality
Religion:     Deities and Places of Worship
The State:  Power Politics and Glory
Self and Society:  The Body
                           Race, Gender, Clan and Class
                           Nature, Knowledge

Comparisons must be made with specific Western art traditions and styles; make concrete analogies to sculpture, painting and/or architecture.

Part 2: Paper

The thesis for the paper with an outline is due beginning of Week 15.  Your paper is due at the beginning of Week 17. This is a major research paper. Start with the information in Gardner’s but include at least six other sources.  Use all standard means of attributing your sources, quotes, footnotes, bibliography, etc. When paraphrasing or restating an idea or theory, always footnote the person or source from where you have gathered your information. This paper is to be at least 6 pages long with additional pages for imbedded imagery. This means that you must present your image examples within the body of the text as they are appropriate. Use modest sizes for the imagery and do not count them as the body (6 pages) of your paper.  Color imagery is preferred. Turn in two (2) copies of this paper to the teacher. One is to be corrected by her and handed back to you and one is to be kept by the instructor for a permanent record. You will make a cover sheet for your paper that includes an appropriate title, your name, the date, and include art work. The artwork may be manipulated to be somewhat translucent or appear behind the title and identifying information.

There must be a bibliography which will list at least 3 written sources and at least 4 other sources including internet sites.  This page will not count as one of your 6 required pages.

Part 3: Presentation (beginning of second semester)

Each student will be responsible for a 15-20 minute presentation of your cultural group which incorporates the thesis of you paper.

          A. You must use power point.  You will create as many ‘slides’ as needed to convey both the art, details, and the information in a legible and easy to read format. This usually takes about 20-30 slides. Don’t forget about the eye catching part, make it attractive.

          B. The presentation must explain the thesis, major points of your paper with vivid examples that will help the other students understand the type of art you have presented and give them solid facts upon which to base their exposure to that culture's traditions.

          C. You are expected to create and give a handout to each student and teacher during your presentation and refer to specific examples so the students have a concrete sample of your presentation. Your thesis must be an integral part of this presentation.

These presentations will be given at the beginning of the second semester so that you have the winter break to prepare. As a member of the class, you will be prepared with your presentation on the day you are assigned.

Each portion of this project represents a major grade.
