Free Music Sites for Podcasting

Note 1: Most, if not all, of these bands and artists are unsigned so you will not likely find your favorite song in here, but they do allow you to sort artists by genre, in order to help narrow your search.

Note 2: The Creative Commons License does not necessarily mean the music is free, but it does mean you can use it in your Podcast without having to purchase additional licenses for usage, however, all of the sites listed below do provide free downloads for most of the music they sponsor.

• GarageBand.com: http://www.garageband.com/htdb/index.html - Easy to search and use.

• RoyaltyFreeMusic.com:  http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/ - Scroll to the middle of the page for detials.
   

• Opsound: http://www.opsound.org/index.php - This site is a little strange but does seem to have some music available.
   

• CNET Downloads: http://music.download.com/2001-1_32-0.html?tag=navtab – Very trusted site but a little harder to navigate and CNET does not guarantee Creative Commons License (you must check with the individual artist's website).
   

• Podsafe Music Network: http://music.podshow.com/index.php - Requires registration for downloading but seems to have a large selection.
   

• Podsafe Audio: http://www.podsafeaudio.com/ - Easy to search and use.
   

• Ioda Promonet: http://promonet.iodalliance.com/login.php  - Requires registration. (I did not register for this one, so I am not sure what it looks like after you register.)
   

• TheFreesoundProject: http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php - Requires registration for downloading.  This site is devoted to sounds not songs like dogs barking, etc.

There is more than one type of Creative Commons license (and I am no expert),
but they all seem to allow you to use work in a non-commercial way for free.
