Pre-AP English III 2009/2010
Newman Smith Mission
To graduate confident and competent individuals prepared to communicate, contribute, and interact responsibly in our global community.
Writing
Throughout the year I will facilitate writing in a variety of genres from personal narratives and poetry to technical writing. Students will keep a writing portfolio for all writing assignments as well as a journal. Grammar work will consist of a short, collaborative daily activity and more focused lessons with guided as well as independent practice. SAT vocabulary lessons are part of a year-long study.
Literature
As a whole class, we will read and discuss a mixture of classic and contemporary literature, including The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby, as well as short stories, non-fiction pieces, and poems. Additionally, we will write a research paper. Students should bring an independently selected novel to class every day for sustained silent reading opportunities, which will strengthen reading strategies and build vocabulary.
Assessment
Assessments will vary according to the learning activities but will include objective quizzes and tests, essay tests, Socratic seminars, visuals, individual and group presentations, and power point presentations. Progress reports will be distributed through CAP every three weeks. Individual tutoring is available before and after school (see below).
Late Work
Late work will be accepted only as follows:
· Formative assignments (daily work, daily quizzes, home work) will be accepted with a daily late penalty of 30 points.
· Summative assignments (unit tests, major papers, projects) will be accepted no more than one week after the due date. Penalty points will be assessed for every day the assignment is late during the allowed week.
Make-up Work
Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. The student is required to get the assignments missed from either the Pre-AP English III website (http://cfbstaff.cfbisd.edu/schweichlerc) or from another student. All make-up work is due within the same number of days the student has missed (e.g. The student misses three days, thus s/he has three days to complete the work s/he missed.). All make-up work must be labeled “Make Up Work.” Projects, tests, and other long-term assignments are due the day the student returns to school, or a late penalty will be assessed (see Late Work Policy).

Grading Policy:
Class Policies
Tardies: You will be in your seat when the bell rings. If you have an unexcused tardy, please sign the tardy book located on the table at the front of the room. Remember: three unexcused tardies constitute an unexcused absence that cannot be made up!
Absences: You are responsible for receiving and making up any work you may have missed during an absence. You will have the same number of days to complete make-up work as you were absent (see Make-up Policy). You must also schedule the make-up of any tests missed. Major tests will likely need to be rescheduled after school. See me before or after school (6:45-7:20/2:30-3:15) to discuss make up work.
Tutoring: I am available before school Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:45 – 7:15. I am available after school most days from 2:30 to 3:15. Please feel free to make an appointment to come by if you need assistance, as I may have a conflict. I am always happy to work with you on an individual basis.
