The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Outdoor Learning Center goes far beyond providing the district with a 42 acre tract of land. It allows approximately five thousand students a year to experience nature. The peninsula formed by the center allows for very diverse animal and plant populations. The surrounding bodies of water are Denton Creek and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Every second, fourth, and sixth grade student spends one day performing scientific experiments in an exciting outdoor setting.
It is available for use by any class in the district for environmental or outdoor studies. It has been used specifically for special needs children as well as programs with students with limited English skills. A unique summer school program for elementary students "The Amateur Naturalist" is also available. The nature of the program provides students with opportunities to use all their senses in discovering the wonders of nature.
Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud, turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade in, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hay fields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries, and hornets, and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education.
